Singler's debut with Real ends in defeat

MADRID — Kyle Singler's debut with Real Madrid didn't go as well as he hoped it would.

The former South Medford High and Duke player didn't start, played sparsely and his team suffered only its second loss of the season, a 90-85 setback to Asefa Estudiantes.

The rights to Singler, originally held by Lucentum Alicante, were bought by Real, and he joined the team last week.

Singler played about six minutes in each half, scoring five points. The 6-foot-8 forward was 1 of 4 on 3-pointers, had one assist and no rebounds.

Real (9-2) began the day in a tie for first place. It led 45-38 at halftime before Asefa Estudiantes rallied. Real now trails FC Barcelona Regal by one game.

Real plays Assignia Manresa next Sunday.

Jayson Granger scored 31 for Asefa Estudiantes.
