Magallanes has a day at Grants Pass Downs

GRANTS PASS — Hector Magallanes will have five entries in Oregon's premier quarter horse race, the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass Downs.

The Boardman trainer saddled the two fastest horses in Sunday's four time trials en route to a clean sweep. Henry Craig and Gabbanelli each ran the 350 yards in 17.99 seconds, and each was ridden by Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa.

“I don't know which one Sosa will ride in the Firecracker,” Magallanes said. “He'll probably stay on Henry Craig. He won the Pot O' Gold on him at Sun Downs, and he's loyal.”

Gabbanelli lost his only previous race when he bobbled coming out of the gate and swerved back and forth to take second.

"He's still green," added Magallanes.

The bettors weren't fooled by that loss. They made him the 1-9 favorite.

The third-fastest horse threatens to spell trouble for Magallanes' speedsters. L Bar D Genuine Red posted a time of 18.05 seconds with Kassie Guglielmino aboard. He led in his trial from the start to the wire, where he was nipped by Henry Craig. That is the same scenario the two played out in the Pot O' Gold, Washington's biggest quarter horse race.

Robert and Teri Beckner trained the 2-year-old. They also trained his owner, Hillary Durham.

"My first job was with the Beckners as a groom," said Durham. "I was 15."

Teri added that Hillary was her good-luck groom — the first horse the teen curried set a track record at Salem.

Now, Durham is 34 with a day job as a mental health specialist/technician. She has kept her hand in at the Beckner farm, though, and in February she bought L Bar D Genuine Red for $6,500.

"I thought that was a fair price. I liked the way he worked, and he has a great personality. Every race he just gets better," said Durham, who likes her chances for the $30,000 Firecracker Futurity. In 2015 that race was won, incidentally, by another Beckner horse, L Bar D Dixon Delite.

The other five qualifiers for the Firecracker are, in descending speed: Jesses Claim Ta Fame, Win Surfer, Mariota Man (trained by Jose Sanguino), Ez Frosty Morn (trained by Scott Raley), and Heres Tinas Boy.

Track Tidbits

RECORD DAY: Attendance Sunday soared to 4,030 — the biggest crowd since 2013. Fans had sprawled into the upper grandstand by the second race, and lines at the betting windows grew alarmingly, as did the smell of kettle corn. The day's handle hit $62,649 (that is $10,598 more than last Father’s Day). This year's meet is shaping up as a different kind of animal.

HOT JOCKEYS: The hot jockeys were Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa and Jake Samuels, with three wins apiece. Jose Guerrero and Louis Zacherle accounted for the other two wins

YUM: Treats for the meet's star — the horses — were procured by pony rider Megan Thompson, who works at Safeway on Williams Highway. She convinced her manager to donate four 25-pound bags of carrots.

UP NEXT: Racing resumes Saturday, with gates opening at 11:30 a.m. and post time at 1 p.m.
