Zacherle has 3 wins at GPD

GRANTS PASS — Jockey Louis Zacherle was the hot rider at Grants Pass Downs Saturday.

The 29-year-old man posted three wins on the eight-race card on the next-to-last day of the season at the Josephine County Fairgrounds.

The nine-day meet concludes today with eight races beginning at 1 p.m.

Zacherle bookended the card with wins in the first and final race of the day. Additionally, he won the fifth race, a 5 ½-furlong claimer for fillies and mares.

Zacherle scored on the 4-1 shot Try Catchin Lily in the first race for quarter horse maidens. He got the 4-year-old mare to the lead out of the gate in the 350-yard sprint and held off L Bar D Mr Rare Time by ½ length.

In the fifth race, Zacherle pulled away on Kameron’s Token for a 6-length victory. The 5-year-old Kameron’s Token won for the first time in three starts this season at GP Downs.

Kassie Guglielmino was the only other jockey with more than one win on Saturday. Guglielmino was victorious on Table for One in the third race and Check Out the Cat in the seventh. Table for One posted her fourth career win at GP Downs.

Travis Wheeler registered his first three-win day as a trainer. Wheeler’s Steel Blue, winner of the sixth race, notched his 14th overall win and increased his winnings to over $87,000.

Today’s Fan Appreciation Day has a pair of featured races — the $4,200 Au Revoir Stakes for thoroughbreds going 1 and 1/16-mile and the $6,300 Grants Pass Derby.

Racing secretary Shorty Martin has installed Uptownfreddybrown as the 2-1 morning line favorite in the Au Revoir, the season’s longest race.

Uptownfreddybrown — a winner in his last out at GP Downs on July 3 — will be ridden by leading jockey Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa. Uptownfreddybrown has five wins in 31 career starts.

E Squared, with Guglielmino aboard, is the second-choice at 5-2. Guglielmino won on E Squared on June 26 at GP Downs.
