Ex-North standout Silafau races in 100
Former North Medford High student Isaac Silafau finished 17th out of 22 overall for American Samoa during 100-meter preliminary racing at the Rio Games on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Silafau recorded a time of 11.51 seconds to claim fifth out of seven in his heat and 17th overall at Olympic Stadium.
The top eight runners advanced to the first round, where runners like Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin awaited.
Silafau was invited to compete in the Summer Olympics.
In his heat, Silafau edged John Ruka of Kiribati (11.65) and Hermenegildo Leite of Angola (11.65). Hassan Saaid of Maldives ran a 10.43. Justin Gatlin of the U.S. holds the fastest time of 10.01, which came in the first round. The semifinals are today at 5 p.m., with the finals following.
