GRANTS PASS — Louis Zacherle cashed in big by capturing the Grants Pass Thoroughbred Stakes in the season finale at the Grants Pass Downs on Sunday.

The jockey Zacherle rode Mr. Takahashi to edge the event’s defending champion, Storm On the River. The win delivered a $5,500 prize and gave Mr. Takahashi its 12th-career win.

Ruben Lozano rode Coronas Bar to prevail over Corona B Gone by a neck in the Grants Pass Quarterhorse Derby. Lozano, who has won four of the five races he has entered at GPD, and Coronas Bar’s trainer Danny Montez also teammed to win Wednesday’s Firecracker Futurity.

Jockey Jose Guerrero saddled Chicks Fast Farley to set the track record for a 600-yard race time. The duo’s 30.548 nipped PJs Hoodini’s 31-second time set on June 28, 2008. Guerrero won the event for fellow Grants Pass residents David Hoover, the trainer, and Diego Guerrero, the owner.

Eduardo Guerrero-Sosa finished as the track’s winningest jockey for the third-straight season by collecting his 12th win with Bar D Bonnie Lee in the fourth race. Zacherle and apprentice jockey Katrina “Kitty” Shaw tied for second with 11 victories apiece.

Like Guerrero-Sosa, Hector Magallanes was the top trainer of the year for the third-straight time with nine wins while fellow trainers Bill Hoff and Nick Lowe finished with five apiece.

Mary Boyle, the owner of Glory B Stables in Grants Pass, won two on the afternoon and became the season’s top owner with four wins.
