Ashland is not growing, its economy is too focused on one thing - tourism - it's way too expensive to buy or build a house, its utilities and fees are out of control, it's crammed with empty second homes - and these issues have been hashed over for years. Work has begun on a new subdivision in Ashland that will add 78 housing units in a city where demand continues to be strong. KDA Homes is in the process of completing the infrastructure - constructing streets, curbs, gutters and sidewalks; and installing connections for sewer, gas, water and electrical. It plans to build Earth Advantage-, Lifelong Housing- and Zero Energy-certified homes, beginning in April.

The Ashland Planning Commission has approved seven housing projects this year. Projects that are underway include a small infill project at North Laurel, two small family subdivisions in the North Mountain Park area totaling 15 single-family lots, and a 6-acre subdivision at the end of Randy Street that will add 23 single family lots and a couple of large lots for potential cottage housing. Also included are two cottage housing developments - a four-unit development at 657 Oak St.

The Garden Cottages community currently under construction at the corner of North Laurel Street and Mountain View Drive will have a shared electric vehicle for residents to use. Mark Knox, founding partner of the developer, KDA Homes, said the shared electric vehicle pilot program is another sustainable perk in the eco-friendly community, saying it could save homeowners thousands a year in car payments, insurance, gas and maintenance.

Medford's homeless village has become something of a tourist attraction. On Thursday, mayors from throughout the state made a tour of Hope Village on McAndrews Road to learn more about one solution for the homeless problem that plagues many cities in Oregon. "This is awesome having mayors from 40 different cities here," said Chad McComas, executive director of Rogue Retreat, the organization that has been the driving force behind Hope Village.

The two Jackson County cities to see the most population growth from 2000 to 2010 - Central Point and Eagle Point - are expected to maintain the highest growth rates until 2068, according to a report from Portland State University's Population Research Center. Eagle Point grew from 4,952 residents in 2000 to 8,508 in 2010, while Central Point went from 13,310 to 17,736 in that 10-year span.
