Since You Asked: Proposed fixes for troubled intersectiuon defended

I have studied the proposed changes at Lone Pine Road and North Foothill Road. I live nearby and am convinced this is going to be a big mess. The 35 mph speed limit will be no more observed than the original 45 mph limit.

The new proposal is a bad quick-fix between all parties involved; city, county, state. Why not just put up a stoplight with controlled turn signals? I realize that it is more expensive and takes more study. But what price do we put on human life?

We at Since You Asked put your questions to Jackson County Engineer Mike Kuntz. Kuntz responded with a list of reasons why they are not going to install a signal at this location.

"And I probably could come up with more," he said.

But, until he does, here are the current reasons:

1. The cross-traffic volume on Lone Pine is not adequate to meet signal warrants. (Signal warrants are the national standard of the industry, used to determine when signal installation should be considered.)

2. The city of Medford has a plan to install a median in Foothill at Lone Pine to eliminate all left turns at the intersection. In fact, the installation of this median is already a condition of a subdivision development off Lone Pine just east of Foothill. It is an unwise investment to spend on a signal that would be removed in a relatively short time.

3. The site conditions that make the intersection challenging today would create different kinds of safety issues with a signal. We'd be trading one problem for another.

4. A traffic signal at this location would be very expensive. The cost of relocating the overhead power could easily equal the cost of the signal alone.

5. The city has plans to install traffic signals at the McAndrews interchange ramps. The northern ramp is too close to Lone Pine for the signals to function efficiently.
