Since You Asked: 'Extreme' crew just needs to be willing to help

I read about the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" show coming to Medford. I would like to volunteer a little time, but I don't have a lot of construction skills.

Do you think they still might need my help? And, if so, what should I do to sign up?

— Bonnie B., Phoenix

Look at you, all full of community spirit, Bonnie. We salute you!

The folks at "Extreme Makeover" estimate it will take about 2,500 volunteers like you to build a new house for a local family. (We are told the identity of the family will be revealed early next month.)

To sign up, go to www.joinextreme.com/oregon and follow the link on the right. You may select the shift you prefer in the application form. Please be advised the system is not sending out confirmation emails.

The site administrators say they are not sure why. But they insist everyone is being listed in the system, and volunteers will be notified by email before their shifts, so don't worry.

The project is 650 volunteers away from completing its volunteer roster with 1,347 "general volunteers" and 217 "skilled volunteers" signed up.

Be assured not everyone needs to be a master carpenter to be helpful to the TV show. But it might help to be a bit nocturnal. As of Thursday afternoon, there were enough volunteers to fill most of the day shifts.

Those who'd agreed to take on a late shift were being gleefully welcomed aboard, as it is still the weak spot for people power.

To get ready for the event, a kickoff pep rally will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 1, at the South Medford High School gymnasium, 1551 Cunningham Ave.
