Flea market returns next week, but antiques show shuttered

What happened to the return of the antiques and collectibles shows that were supposed to return to the Armory in April?

— Judy V., Talent

We have a mixed bag of good and bad news for you, Judy, so we'll lead with the good news: The Medford Armory reopened in July after a lengthy closure, marking the triumphant return of the "original" Medford Giant Flea Market — a fixture for bargain hunters for four and a half decades. The next flea market will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at the armory, 1701 S. Pacific Highway.

The Armory's doors had been closed since April 2016 while the building underwent a multi-million dollar update that included structural improvements, replacing its heating and air conditioning system, new windows, restrooms and kitchen facilities, all while eradicating the nasty lead that prompted the remodel of armories around the state in the first place.

Now for the bad news, there was an antiques show casualty caused by the armory's closure — and likely the one that's on the top of your mind. The Southern Oregon Antiques and Collectibles Club, which held shows at the armory for 33 years, decided their 2015 show would be the club's last fall show, according to a November story. SOACC founder Robby Miller said that missing a year would lead to a domino effect of lost out-of-state vendors who'd find success at alternate shows outside the area.

"They're not going to come back to you if their show did good," Miller said in November.
