Source of Almeda fire still unknown
Was it ever discovered how the Almeda fire started?
— Lyn, Ashland
We don’t have anything definitive yet, Lyn.
Police did arrest a suspect who is accused of starting a fire near the railroad tracks in Phoenix Sept. 8, but the Almeda fire was already raging by that time.
Michael Jarrod Bakkela, 42, is being held in the Jackson County Jail on $5,024,000 bail.
The most recent development in Bakkela’s case is that a trial is scheduled for August on Bakkela’s charges of first-degree arson, first-degree criminal mischief, multiple counts of reckless endangering and first-degree animal abuse, Jackson County Circuit Court records show.
The trial is expected to last four days starting Aug. 10.
More information might become available during the trial, but police are still saying the cause of the Almeda fire is under investigation.
