Grizzlies let five-run lead slip away in baseball opener

KLAMATH FALLS — Jack Mitchell scored the go-ahead run on a Drew Seater single in the bottom of the sixth as Henley crawled out of a 5-0 hole to beat Ashland 7-5 Tuesday in the season opener for both teams at Henley High School.

The Hornets added an insurance run on an Ashland error, and Henley relief pitcher Josh Overstreet escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the seventh with back-to-back strikeouts.

Jack Carroll, a senior, started on the mound for the Grizzlies and surrendered three runs on three hits while striking out four and walking five in 3 2/3 innings of work. His replacement, sophomore Steen Fredrickson, was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.

The Grizzlies jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first, roughing up Henley starter Jesse Hilyard with four hits. Ashland leadoff hitter Bryce Rogan laced a leadoff double and scored on a single by Carter Glick. Ryan Bottimore followed with a run-scoring triple and came home on Jamie Flynn's single up the middle.

Rogan, Glick and Bottimore had two hits apiece to lead the Grizzlies' offense.

Ashland made it 4-0 on Eric Carlson's sacrifice fly in the second and 5-0 on Cammarota's RBI single in the third.

Mitchell's bases loaded single in the fourth scored two runs and kickstarted the Hornets' comeback.
