The 17th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team stunned No. 8 Columbia (Mo.) in the first day of the NAIA National Championships pool play round today at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Raiders started hot and kept the pressure on throughout en route to a gutsy 25-15, 19-25, 26-24, 26-24 victory that gave SOU a jump-start in its bid to advance to the final 12-team tournament, something it's only accomplished once before.
Senior outside hitter Motade Atanda had 19 kills and five digs, Paulla Pinheiro nine kills and 16 digs and Lauren McGowne 24 assists to lead the Raiders (24-5), who face No. 4 Texas of Brownsville on Wednesday and No. 21 Vanguard on Thursday. Cole Brooklynn added 23 digs for the Raiders, who out-blocked Columbia 14-2.
