Raiders suffer double-overtime setback
Claudia Diaz scored a golden goal in the 108th minute to give University of California, Merced a 1-0, nonconference win over Southern Oregon on Wednesday at Merced, Calif.
Diaz scored a one-timer off an assist by Veronica Villacorta in double-overtime to give the Bobcats their fifth straight shutout and fourth win overall to go with one tie.
The Raiders (1-3-2) were outshot 16-9, including 12-2 in on-goal opportunities, as SOU keeper Kylie Moltzen recorded 11 saves to keep the game going. It was SOU's third double-overtime game of the season. In the other two, the Raiders tied both Menlo and Oregon Tech 1-1.
Substitutes Macaylea Mitchell and Makena Totushek fired SOU's only two shots on goal.
The contest was the Raiders' final tune-up for their Cascade Conference opener Friday at College of Idaho. SOU enters league play in a bit of a scoring drought, having scored only one goal in its last 307 minutes of game time.
College of Idaho is 4-0-1 and has outscored its opponents 16-4.
