SOU men, women both victorious in Doc Welton Classic

MEDFORD — The 10th-ranked Southern Oregon men's wrestling team dominated Thursday's Doc Welton Classic with bonus-point wins in nine of 15 contested matches, topping Pacific 49-6 and Simon Fraser (B.C.) 35-17 at the Medford Armory.

The Raiders improved to 6-1 in dual action and moved within one win of clinching their 46th consecutive winning season.

After putting a perfect 60-0 win on Pacific in the teams' most recent meeting last year, the Raiders nearly completed another shutout before the Boxers stopped the bleeding at 197 pounds.

SOU got pins from 14th-ranked Matt Peterson (133 pounds), second-ranked Tyler Cowger (149), C.J. McKinnis (165), third-ranked Ryan McWatters (184) and heavyweight Alejandro Sandoval. Casey Coulter, the Raiders' 125-pounder, started the dual with an 8-0 major decision over Christian Guerra, and Reed Tennyson held onto a 5-4 win over Tyler Howe at 174. SOU's other 12 points came via forfeits.

Tyler Kailiuli (197) had Pacific's only win, a pin of Sabir Rasulov.

Against Simon Fraser, the Raiders accepted three forfeits and had an injury default of their own but claimed four of six contests.

Coulter tacked on to his big day with a 17-0 technical fall against Oscar Bulaqui, and 157-pounder Hunter Hodges picked up SOU's next with another technical fall, 15-0 over Tanner Spray. Tennyson added another decision, 9-2 against Alex Berfranger, and McWatters stayed perfect in duals matches with a 14-5 major over Morgan Smith

McWatters is now 6-0 in duals and has scored bonus points in five of those wins.

Cruz Velasquez (133) and Tyler McLean (165) earned the Clan's wins with a fall and a technical fall.

SOU will travel to the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.
