No. 18 Southern Oregon drops four-setter to Hope International

Hope International's triple-threat attack was too much for Southern Oregon in a nonleague match at Fullerton, California, Monday.

Mikayla Derieg, Katie Landazuri and Kimberly Schnars combined for 39 kills to lead the Royals to a 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18 victory over the 18th-ranked Raiders.

Nila Lukens had 14 kills, and Lauren McGowne 44 assists and nine digs for SOU, which fell to 3-2 three days after throttling No. 9 Vanguard in straight sets.

Emma Gasman added seven kills and four blocks for the Raiders, who face 19th-ranked Biola today.

The opening set was up for grabs after Gasman and Taylor Ristvedt combined for a block to tie the score at 21. The Royals won the next four points, clinching the set on an ace by Johannah Wade.

In the second, SOU scored four straight to get within 15-14, but Hope International reclaimed control with a 4-1 run of its own and scored four straight to go up 23-16.

The Raiders used a 5-0 run capped by a Gasman kill to turn a 17-15 deficit into a 20-17 lead in the third. The Royals crawled to within 24-23 on back-to-back attack errors by the Raiders, and SOU clinched the set on a kill by Lukens.

The Raiders led 8-5 early in the fourth, but the Royals went on an 8-1 run to take a 13-9 lead and led the rest of the way. Derieg paced the Royals with 14 kills, and Landazuri added 13.
