No. 19 Biola takes down No. 18 SOU
Nineteenth-ranked Biola won the first two sets and fought off No. 18 Southern Oregon's comeback attempt in a hard-fought fourth to win a nonleague women's volleyball match Tuesday at La Mirada, California.
The Eagles dominated the first two sets and benefited from a couple key miscues that finished off the Raiders, 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23.
The loss, SOU's second in a row, dropped the Raiders to 3-3 heading into their final nonconference tune-up today at Westmont (Calif.).
Ariana Sattler led the Raiders with 12 kills, Kiley Barcroft added 17 digs and Lauren McGowne finished with 46 assists. Also for SOU, Courtney Macklin had 10 kills and five blocks, Emma Gasman 11 kills and three blocks and Nila Lukens nine kills, two digs and a block.
Biola's Hanna van Warmerdam had 15 kills on 31 swings to lead the Eagles' attack, which had a .227 attack percentage. Sierra Bauder had 12 kills and five blocks and Tori Moons 27 assists.
After winning the third set going away the Raiders overcame deficits of 10-6 and 12-7 to take a 16-15 lead. Later, the Raiders won two straight points on back-to-back kills by Taylor Ristvedt and Nila Lukens to tie things up at 23.
Biola reclaimed the lead on a kill by Brooke Watts and clinched the match when Macklin misfired.
Southern Oregon's first league match is Sept. 2 at Corban.
