No. 16 Westmont sweeps No. 18 Southern Oregon
Sixteenth-ranked Westmont used a vicious attack to beat 18th-ranked Southern Oregon in straight sets Wednesday, 25-18, 25-20, 25-14, in nonleague action at Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, California.
The undefeated Warriors (5-0) rode the second-highest attack percentage (.289) against SOU in the last two years to a decisive victory, handing the Raiders their third straight loss.
Southern Oregon fell to 3-4, including 2-2 against Top 25 opponents, heading into next week's Cascade Conference opener at Corban.
Emma Gasman had eight kills and three assisted blocks, and Nila Lukens seven kills to lead SOU, which hit .029. Lauren McGowne added 20 assists and three digs.
For Westmont, Libby Dahlberg had 10 kills and Mila Maricic eight blocks and five kills. Kami Troesh added 12 digs and two service aces for the Warriors, who are 3-0 against Cascade Conference opponents after previous wins over No. 8 Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho.
The Warriors used a 6-1 run to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 13-9 lead in the opening set, with Dahlberg and Taylor Beckman providing two kills apiece.
SOU won three of four points to get within four at 19-15, the last points coming on a Kiley Barcroft ace, but Westmont won the next three points to take control.
Westmont jumped out to early leads in the next two sets, going up 8-3 in the second and 11-2 in the third.
