SOU earns series split, but Yotes go 2-1 in CCC games

ASHLAND — Southern Oregon got its bats going for another split with The College of Idaho on Monday at University Field, concluding a four-game set that yielded a combined 73 hits between the teams.

The Yotes (11-3 overall) won Game 1, 8-4, to go 2-1 in the Cascade Conference portion of the series after the teams also split Sunday's games. The third-ranked Raiders (15-7) got one back in the nonleague-counting finale, 10-7, as freshman Hannah Shimek hit a key three-run double and totaled four RBI.

C of I pitcher Colette Robert (8-1) threw her second complete game in as many days in the opener, working around 10 hits, two walks and four Yotes errors to allow just two earned runs. Marissa Maddox went 3-for-4 with a triple, Taylor Eakle went 2-for-4 with a home run, and both had two RBI and two runs scored.

The Yotes scored three in the second to go ahead and two more in the third, totaling 12 hits against four Raider pitchers. Martha Tooley slugged a pair of doubles with a run and an RBI.

In Game 2, SOU loaded the bases with one out in the first and capitalized when Rebecca Velasquez hit an RBI single to left and Karlee Coughlin lined a two-run single to left-center. Leading 3-1 in the third, Harlee Donovan started the inning with a hit up the middle and Katrina Winterburn and Velasquez followed with infield singles to load the bases again with nobody out. Two batters later, Shimek cleared them with a deep drive to right.

Morgan Jones (3-2) got the win with 4 2/3 innings of relief work, allowing four earned runs. The Yotes cut into a 9-2 deficit with a five-spot in the sixth, but Gabby Sandoval entered to get the last five outs — including three by strikeout — to earn her second save.

Shimek and Taelor Mayben had two hits and a run scored apiece in the contest. Velasquez went 4-for-7 on the day, and Donovan finished the series 4-for-9 with two doubles, a triple, four intentional walks and four runs scored. In three starts during the series, Winterburn went 5-for-9 with two doubles, four runs and two walks.

C of I's Trystin Crofts was 3-for-4 with four RBI, including a two-run double in the sixth, during a spot start at shortstop in the finale. Jordan Maddox and Kylie Smith totaled six hits apiece in the series.

SOU will play Providence (Mont.) in its next CCC series, scheduled for Friday and Saturday. The games have been moved from Great Falls, Mont., to Pasco, Wash., due to inclement weather.
