Sprauer places 3rd in CCC heptathlon

LA GRANDE — Loghan Sprauer blew away her personal best in the heptathlon with 4,536 points, but it wasn’t enough to defend her Cascade Conference title as she finished third in the CCC Multi-Events Championships on Friday at Community Stadium.

Sprauer, a junior, put up the fourth-highest total in Southern Oregon history and the fourth-highest in the NAIA this season. It should be plenty for a spot in the 16-person field at the NAIA Outdoor Championships and gave the Raiders six points toward their team score at the upcoming CCC Championships.

Eastern Oregon’s Paige Dodd, the 2017 champion, won it again with a point total of 4,826, shooting to No. 1 on the national performance list. Corban’s Valerie Schmidt snuck into second place with 4,620 points, and SOU’s Julia Delucchi missed scoring by one place in ninth with 3,713.

After landing in second place through four events Thursday, Sprauer was marred by a javelin mark of 65 feet 9 inches that was 11th-best in the field. She bounced back with a PR in the 800-meter finale of 2 minutes 21.99 seconds, however, and was top-two in all three running disciplines as well as the high jump.

Sprauer won the event last year with a score of 4,391.

The rest of SOU’s team will compete Saturday at the Lane Invitational in Eugene. The CCC Championships will be held May 10-11 in Ashland.
