Raider trio voted CCC Athletes of the Week

Southern Oregon thrower Kevin Tunnell and softball players Gabby Sandoval and Hannah Shimek were voted Cascade Conference Red Lion Athletes of the Week on Monday, the league office announced.

Tunnell, a senior from Napa, Calif., topped a shot-put field of 26 at the Linfield Open with a best of 48 feet 8 inches and placed fifth in the hammer at 146-5. He’ll enter this weekend’s CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank as the No. 2 seed in the shot put with a best of 50-2.

The Raiders had additional outstanding showing at the Linfield Open on the women’s side, a correction for which was issued Sunday by the meet hosts. Joanna Galli, a senior, cleared 11-9 in the pole vault to hit the NAIA ‘A’ standard exactly for the CCC’s best mark this season.

Sandoval and Shimek helped the Raider softball team to its third consecutive CCC Tournament title. Sandoval pitched all 21 innings in SOU’s three wins, allowing 17 hits and three runs. She broke the conference’s single-season wins record Friday, its shutouts record Saturday (13) and earned her 30th victory in Sunday’s title-game win over Oregon Tech.

Shimek went 5-for-10 in the tournament, scoring a pair of runs and driving in five with a triple in the Raiders’ two wins against OIT.
