Zabinski, Allen selected to Academic All-District team
Brendan Allen and Wyatt Zabinski, both seniors on the Southern Oregon University men’s soccer team, were named on Thursday to the NAIA Academic All-District 4 team, as nominated and selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The annual honor is designed to recognize the top student-athletes in the country for a combination of their academic and athletic accomplishments. Allen and Zabinksi were among 12 honorees on the District 4 team and 48 across the NAIA. Both will move forward as nominees for the CoSIDA Academic All-America team, which will be announced later this month.
Allen, a forward from Roseville, Calif., is a public accounting major with a cumulative 3.95 GPA. He’s recorded 18 goals — the second-highest total in the team’s five-year history — and eight assists in his time with the Raiders, which dates back to 2015. As a freshman on SOU’s inaugural squad, he was a second-team All-Cascade Conference selection.
This season, Allen has tallied four goals and one assist, including goals in each of the last three games of the regular season to help the Raiders bring their unbeaten streak to eight.
A goalkeeper from Phoenix, Ariz., Zabinkski is a biology major with a 3.55 GPA. He’s also a two-time All-CCC selection, and in 2017 was voted the conference’s co-defensive player of the year. In four seasons with the Raiders, he’s totaled 28 solo shutouts and shared six more. As a sophomore he allowed 0.3 goals per game in conference play, and as a junior he ranked second in the NAIA by allowing 0.47 overall.
Zabinski has been credited with five solo and two shared shutouts as a senior. With 25 saves, he’s giving up an average of 0.84 goals per game.
The Raiders (12-5-1 overall) will enter the CCC Tournament as the No. 3 seed after going 10-2-1 in conference play. On Tuesday, they’ll have a quarterfinal matchup against Northwest (Wash.) in Springfield.
