COVID-19 cancels St. Mary’s football, SOU men’s soccer
Several athletic events involving area teams have been canceled because of COVID-19 protocols, including tonight’s St. Mary’s High football game and Southern Oregon University men’s soccer activities.
St. Mary’s game scheduled for 7 tonight against Sutherlin at U.S. Cellular Community Park has been canceled.
Crusaders athletic director and football coach Jamie Young confirmed the move in a text message, saying Sutherlin’s team is in quarantine.
St. Mary’s (1-2) is scheduled to host Douglas next Friday at U.S. Cellular.
Rogue River has canceled its remaining games, including last week’s contest at Lakeview and Saturday’s game against Coquille in Grants Pass. The Chieftains, 0-2, were to finish the season next week against the Ashland junior varsity.
Among other prep football games canceled this week are North Valley at Hidden Valley, Henley at Klamath Union and Brookings-Harbor at Douglas.
Southern Oregon’s men’s soccer team has begun a mandatory 14-day pause of all team activities in accordance with Cascade Collegiate Conference protocols, SOU director of athletics Matt Sayre announced in a release today.
The earliest the Raiders could resume practice is April 7. The remaining games on their CCC schedule -- Sunday and Monday at Oregon Tech, April 5-6 against Corban and two makeup games April 10-11 at Northwest (Wash.) that were to be played only if they affected the CCC championship race -- have been canceled, but could be made up later as non-conference games.
According to the CCC's Oregon Health Authority-approved protocols, teams with fewer than 50 individuals are required to suspend activities when three or more have been put in isolation, and may resume two weeks after the date of the most recent positive coronavirus test.
The Raiders were 3-1 through two weeks of action. Their scheduled opening weekend at Northwest had been canceled due to NU pausing team activities.
