World Wellness Weekend

Southern Oregonians will have the opportunity to explore — new frontiers in health and wellness at the World Wellness Weekend, Saturday — and Sunday, Sept. 11 and 12, at Southern Oregon University's Raider Stadium, — in Ashland.

Jud Schwartz of Ashland-based Beach Avenue Productions, — is producing the event.

Those attending the event will be immersed in the worlds — of the healing arts and medicine from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and — from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. There will be 87 booths, representing a — wide range of healing modalities.

Talks and workshops conducted by 63 presenters will be — offered at various locations around the grounds and in classrooms. Lecturers — will alternate with performers on the main stage. Drs. Deepak Chopra and — Bernie Siegel will give the keynote addresses.

Siegel will speak from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Saturday on the — theme, "What is Wellness?" With degrees from Colgate University, Cornell — Medical College and surgical training at Yale, Siegel has been one of — the most persuasive advocates of complementary and alternative medicine — for almost three decades.

Since retiring from clinical practice as a pediatric and — general surgeon in 1989, he has focused on humanizing medical care and — teaching other healthcare professionals about the mind-body connection. —

His first book, "Love, Medicine and Miracles," sold more — than 2 million copies and went to number one on the New York Timers Bestseller — List.

"If you act as if you're the person you want to become, — you become that person," Siegel says. "Act as if the immune system of — performers changes: it's up when they are acting in comedies, down when — they are acting in tragedies."

Recognizing that animals and children know how to live, — Siegel recommends that we bring out the child in one another using humor. — As an example, Siegel suggests wearing a bracelet with the letters WWLD — on it: What Would Lassie Do? "Get a pet and learn from him."

Chopra will speak from — to 4 p.m. Sunday on the topic — of human potentiality and the nature of reality. Chopra, formerly the — chief of staff at Boston Regional Medical Center, built a practice as — an endocrinologist and taught at Tufts University and Boston University — Schools of Medicine.

He now teaches other physicians at The Chopra Center For — Well Being, with continuing medical education credits being granted by — the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

He has written more than 45 books, and is an international — speaker.

"Human evolution is very much accelerated in our times," — Chopra says. "This is due to the Internet, reading, participating in groups — - neural networks of the planetary mind. I think the human being is poised — for the next phase of its evolution: ESP, intuition, creativity unsurpassed, — the ability to manifest the miraculous."

During the World Wellness Weekend, Ashland Family YMCA — will host Healthy Kids activities all day, and provide childcare.

Among the sponsors for the weekend event are Horizon Institute, — Jefferson Public Radio, Ashland Food Co-op, Juice Plus, Project A, Phone — Directories Company, the Ashland Daily Tidings, the Mail Tribune, Ashland — Community Hospital and the Ashland Chamber of Commerce.

Part of the proceeds will benefit the SOWAC Microenterprise — Development Center, whose mission is to help people start, expand, or — improve their small business by offering practical hands-on business training, — technical assistance and loans.

Tickets are $50 in advance for a weekend pass and $60 — at the door. Single day passes are $30 in advance and $35 at the door, — if available.
