Holiday sparkle with the Rogue Valley Symphony

The Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Arthur — Shaw, will present Holiday Candlelight Concerts over two weekends in December. — A long time symphony tradition, the Candlelight Concert Series celebrates — beautiful music with the ambiance of more than 150 candles in local churches — of Southern Oregon.

This year's program features guest artists Nancie Linn — Shaw and Katelinn Shaw performing Bach's "Concerto for Two Violins," and — "Prayer of St. Gregory," by Hovhaness for orchestra and solo trumpet featuring — Bruce Dresser on trumpet.

In addition, the program also includes the Orchestra performing — Grieg's "Holberg Suite," "Chacony in g minor," by Purcell/Britten and — the Rogue Valley Symphony Brass Ensemble performing Gabrieli's most widely — known work "Sonata pian'e forte," and "Ruggles' Angels."

The performances will take Saturday in Ashland at the — First Baptist Church at 8 p.m. and again on Friday, Dec. 17, and 8 p.m. —

The final performance will be Saturday, Dec. 18 in Medford — at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Johann Sebastian Bach was not only a master pianist but — also an accomplished violinist. He wrote three violin concertos between — the years of 1720 and 1730. The Concerto for Two Violins, BWV 1043, was — the last and has become the most popular. Through three movements Bach — displays his counterpoint ability at its finest as he expounds and manipulates — the theme between the soloists and the orchestra. Seamlessly woven harmonies, — canon-like melodies and enthralling poetry between the two violins shows — Bach the violinist as well as Bach the composer.

Nancie Linn Shaw and Katelinn Shaw are the wife and daughter — of the Rogue Valley Symphony's conductor, Art Shaw. In performing Bach's — famous Concerto for Two Violins they are continuing a long standing Shaw — tradition. Art Shaw had performed this wonderful piece with his father — as a young man. Nancie Linn Shaw is currently a teacher in the Bellevue, — Washington school district, where she directs thriving middle school and — high school orchestras. She is well known in Southern Oregon due to her — past experience performing with the Rogue Valley Symphony, Rogue Opera, — Jefferson Baroque Orchestra and recitals with her colleagues at Southern — Oregon University. Katelinn Shaw began her violin studies at the age of — 6, and has continued her exceptional musicianship as Concertmaster of — the Youth Orchestra of Southern Oregon and most recently as Concertmaster — of the Seattle Youth Symphony Junior Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster — of the Washington All-State Orchestra. Also featured on the Holiday Candlelight program is American — composer Alan Hovhaness Prayer of St. Gregory, with trumpeter Bruce Dresser. — Well recorded and lauded during the 1950's and 60's, Alan Hovhaness was — firmly entrenched within the group of composers (John Cage and Lou Harrison, — among them) who spearheaded one of the great shifts in twentieth century — American music, namely that of looking to non-western cultures for creative — renewal in art music.
