Galleries open doors to youth art
The Ashland Gallery Association and Ashland Middle School — have teamed up to benefit the school's visual art program and the launch — of a literary magazine for the students.
Twenty local artists and 30 students from Robert Kuhn's — art classes have hand painted 50 small school chairs in the style and — themes of various children's stories from Dr. Seuss and traditional tales. — These chairs are being displayed at 15 AGA galleries throughout Ashland — until 8 p.m. on First Friday. At that time, there will be a live auction — of 25 of the decorated chairs at Mobius Productions, 281 Fourth Street, — across the street from Gallery DeForest. The remaining 25 chairs will — be displayed at the 15 galleries until March 12 when they will go to the — highest bidder through a silent auction.
As an additional element of the project, poetry and art — by 25 Ashland Middle School students will be exhibited at Gallery DeForest, — Friday through the March 15. Gallery owner Cathy DeForest and David Bjurstrom — of David Bjurstrom Studio & Gallery are going into Libre Cory's classroom — to assist students in creating art to go along with their original poetry. — Having found school budgets limited for art and literary programs in the — schools, DeForest was inspired to create this benefit as a way of bringing — these needs into focus. DeForest was welcomed by Ashland Middle School — teachers, Libre Cory and Robert Kuhn and have collaborated with them to — create this art and literary exhibition.
Galleries participating in the event include Art & Soul, — Bead Studio, David Bjurstrom Studio & Gallery, Due Madri Heirloom Quilts, — Gallerie Karon, Gallery DeForest, Hanson Howard Gallery, Illahe Design — Gallery, JEGA Gallery, The Living Gallery, Mistwood Studio Gallery, Nuwandart, — Pelton House B&B, SacredNudes Gallery and 369 Up.
This event also coincides with the Ashland Gallery Association's — Student Art Show. Ashland High School students will be showing selected — work in AGA member galleries for the month of March with the openings — on First Friday.
