Mojacar Flamenco celebrates tenth anniversary

L.A. based Flamenco ensemble Mojacar Flamenco kicks off its tenth anniversary tour with a concert at the Mobius, an Ashland performance art venue, visual arts gallery, independent movie theater, digital audio/video recording studio night club cafe lounge, at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 281 Fourth St. Admission is $10.

The concert features the group's co-founders, virtuoso flamenco guitarist/composer Stephen Dick and the brilliant flamenco dancer/choreographer Katerina Tom&

225;s, performing an evening of traditional and original works highlighting the group's unique blend of Flamenco and Latin Jazz.

In 1996, while Stephen and Katerina were at an artists' retreat in the village of Moj&

225;car in southern Spain, Stephen was asked to present a concert of original music at a local arts center. He composed a series of pieces blending Flamenco forms with Latin rhythms and Jazz harmonies. When they returned to the U.S., Stephen and Katerina formed Moj&

225;car Flamenco, highlighting their distinctive blend of music and dance, Flamenco and Latin Jazz, traditional and modern.

Since then, their unique sound has taken them to some extraordinary places. They toured the U.S. and Canada with rock legend, Concrete Blonde. They have won 5 awards from the Spanish Ministry of Culture for their innovative work in Flamenco. They have performed on Spanish television in Spain and the U.S., and were finalists in the 2001 Sur Jerez flamenco competition in Spain. Katerina was awarded an L.A. Treasures Award for her work as a flamenco choreographer. In '05 and '06 Moj&

225;car Flamenco performed in residency at L.A.'s legendary flamenco nightclub, El Cid. Music from Moj&

225;car's first CD, Naranjas Amargas, has been featured on NPR's "Morning Edition." They presented the award-winning concert, Cantan Los Fuegos, an evening of Flamenco Dance Theatre featuring the works of Spanish composer Manuel De Falla and poet/playwright, Federico Garc&

237;a Lorca.

As well as their summer-long tour from San Diego to Seattle, Moj&

225;car Flamenco celebrates it's tenth anniversary with the release of their latest album "Al Que Quiere," a collection of some of Moj&

225;car's best known music, including many of the tunes first performed at the concert in Moj&

225;car village: where it all started.
