AHS teams both go 2-2
The Ashland High boys' and girls' water polo teams both went 2-2 over the weekend in a Southern Conference tournament at the Southern Oregon University pool.
The Grizz girls bounced back from an 0-2 Saturday by beating both Sheldon and North Eugene on Sunday. Zaya McSky's seven goals and Faith King's five steals helped the Grizzlies throttle Sheldon 19-3, and Lauren Bruce scored five goals in Ashland's 11-7 win over North Eugene.
Tryna Womack added eight blocks against Sheldon.
The Ashland boys went 1-1 Sunday for the second day in a row, routing North Eugene 20-12 before suffering a 9-7 setback to Sheldon.
Corey Thomas scored 12 goals in Ashland's win and Wynn Michaels and Lucas Opgennorth added two apiece. Grizz goalies Cameron Mitzel and Ryan Hill combined for 13 blocked shots.
Dane Coke had four goals, Andrew Cataldo scored three and Mitzel blocked eight shots in the loss to Sheldon.
On Saturday, the Ashland girls dropped a 12-11 heartbreaker to Cottage Grove and fell 13-3 to South Eugene. The Ashland boys, meanwhile, downed Cottage Grove 20-9 and lost 9-6 to South Eugene.
The Grizz girls were led on Saturday by McSky, who scored five goals against Cottage Grove, and Womack, who blocked seven shots against South Eugene.
The Ashland boys got seven goals from Cataldo and three each from Thomas, Troy Robinson and Rafferty Swink against Cottage Grove. Thomas added three goals and Mitzel 10 blocks in the loss to South Eugene.
The Ashland water polo teams next host Medford, Oct. 10 at the SOU pool.
