Youth Symphony holds fundraiser

The Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon (YSSO) has announced this season's first fund raising event to benefit the YSSO. "Sounds of Music at Grizzly Peak," an afternoon of music, hors d'oeuvres and a sampling of Grizzly Peak Vineyard's red wines, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 14, from — to 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and are available through the YSSO office by calling 858-8859. Tickets are limited.

This event in Grizzly Peak Vineyard's hillside setting in Ashland will feature performances by several of the YSSO's young musicians. Three guest artists &

Ordabek Duissen, Sergey Tsoy and Dina Duissen &

will also perform.

Duissen, a native of Kazakhstan, has performed chamber music in Italy, Russia, China, England, Germany and in the United States. Violinist and composer Sergey Tsoy has been a member of the Fort Worth Symphony, the Dallas Opera Orchestra and the Tulsa Opera Orchestra.

Tsoy is a soloist and performs chamber music, and has taught violin and music theory. Violinist Ordabek Duissen, brother of Dina Duissen, is an accomplished musician and teacher as well. The performances begin at 4:30 p.m.

Established in 1988, the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon (YSSO) is a youth-centered not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing young people of Southern Oregon with opportunities to expand their knowledge of classical music by learning and performing challenging symphonic repertoire. The YSSO's mission is to provide exceptional performance experiences under the leadership of professional conductors and coaches and to foster a lifelong appreciation of the arts.

The YSSO includes three ensembles: Youth Strings (entry-level),Youth Orchestra (intermediate) and Youth Symphony (advanced). From 175-195 students from throughout Jackson, Josephine and Klamath Counties participate in the YSSO each year.

The Fall Concert Series performances will take pace on Nov. 11 at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater in Medford and on Nov. 12 at Southern Oregon University's Music Recital Hall. Chamber Music Series concerts take place in Jacksonville. The ensembles of the YSSO also present special concerts at the Rogue Valley Manor and at Mountain Meadows Retirement Community.
