Kids perform in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'

Oregon Stage Works Ashland Children's Theatre, located at 185 A St. in the A Street Market Place, presents William Shakespeare's most fun and romantic comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." This one-hour version combines local adult actors with student actors from OSW's Acting Academy. SOU graduate and former OSF actor, Brandon St. Clair Saunders, who plays Oberon, finds this combination of adult and young actors "a brilliant idea and an opportunity to learn." The cast also features David Dials, Diana Girvin, Kyndra Laughery, Eve Smyth, and Barbara Rosen. Young actors include Dana Bogdonave, Bryan Fraser, Molly Anne Guthrie, Taylor Hood, Rachel Kaiser, Tawnee Kell, Makayla Laughery, Tejas Leier Heyden, Jeremiah Lieberman, Zach Markovich, Emma Pierotti, Destiny Spurgeon-Couraud, Uri Wolf-Blank, Sierra Wood, and Lili Wurfl.

The roles are reversed in this innovative re-telling of the Bard's classic play. The youngest and smallest cast members play the most powerful characters, with the oldest and tallest performers playing the fairies. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" will bring to life a troupe of inept amateur actors, two pairs of star-crossed lovers, a feuding pair of supernatural sprites, and a love potion gone wrong. All this mystery and magic come together in an enchanted moonlit forest. It's an hour of fun for the whole family, and is produced in partnership with The Gardner Grout Foundation.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" performs two weekends only, Fridays and Saturdays, March 2, 3, 9, 10 at 7 p.m., with Sunday 2 p.m. matinees on March 4 and 11.. There will be two specially priced school performances on Tuesday, March 6 at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Tickets for the public performance are $5 for children ages 4-16, $6 at the door; and $10 for adults, $12 at the door. Tickets are available at The Music Coop in Ashland and Grocery Outlet in Medford.

There will also be a special prologue performance of A Fairy Meeting, by Eve Smyth on March 3, 4, 9 and 11, performed by students from the Young Academy production class.

Bruce Wallace Hostetler directs the play. He holds an M.F.A. in Directing from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama. Bruce has directed opera, musicals, and plays, including numerous world premieres, at theatres from New York to Santa Cruz. He co-created and directed all of Rogue Opera's highly acclaimed children's touring shows. Most recently he directed "On Golden Pond" for OSW.

Eve Smyth , director and writer of A Fairy Meeting, also serves as actor and improv coach on this project. Eve, along with Kate Sullivan, co directs Ashland Children's Theatre. Eve received her degree in theatre from San Francisco State University. She has written and performed in the last two offerings from Ashland Children's Theatre, The Snow White Project and The Peter Pan Project.
