SOU Symphonic Band holds winter concert

The Southern Oregon University Symphonic Band will present its Winter concert March 15 at 8 in the Music Department Recital Hall under the direction of Cynthia Hutton.

The Symphonic Band presents its Winter concert titled "Bandsongs". This term the Symphonic Band will feature Southern Oregon University Music Faculty member, Fredna Grimland. Grimland will join the band with selections by, Owen Reed "Michigan Morn" and Aaron Copland "I bought me a Cat". Other works to be performed by the Symphonic Band include, Gustav Holst "Second Suite in F Major", "Poem" by Scott Boerma, "Heroes, Lost and Fallen (A Vietnam Memorial)" by David Gillingham, "Greek Folk Song Suite" by Franco Cesarini and "Here's a Health" written by Rob Wiffin. Also included on the program include works by the newly formed Contemporary Chamber Players Ensemble, presenting "Lamentations: Children of War" by Cynthia Hutton and a composition collectively written by the Contemporary Chamber Players Ensemble. The selections for the concert are influenced by the great heritage of folk songs, hymns and poetry.

The Southern Oregon University Symphonic Band is comprised of 55 musicians representing both music majors and non music majors from SOU. The Ensemble is the sole concert band on the campus of Southern Oregon University. It is dedicated to the performance of both the great masterworks for wind band and the contemporary music written for winds and percussion. The Contemporary Chamber Players is an ensemble dedicated to the exploration of new repertoire for chamber winds and percussion. The ensemble is designed for the student who is interested in a creative and collaborative experience through the medium of contemporary music.
