'Voices from the Valley'
Rogue Opera's "Voices From The Valley Opera Scenes Concerts" will be performed March 9 at SOU Recital Hall and March 11 at First Presbyterian in Medford.
The concerts will feature staged scenes from operas by Menotti, Britten, Cimarosa, Berlioz, Gounod, Donizetti, Nicolai, Offenbach, Barber and Bernstein and are directed by Rogue Opera's new artistic director, Willene Gunn, 30-year veteran director of San Francisco Conservatory of Music opera program, with pianist Jennifer Schloming.
A variety of scenes from many operas will enchant the audience with themes of disguise, love, deception, magic, revenge and fun. The operas include Beatrice and Benedict, Candide, Coronation of Poppea, The Consul, The Old Maid and the Thief, The Turn of the Screw, The Secret Marriage, Romeo and Juliet, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Orpheus and the Underworld, Vanessa and L'elisir d'amore.
The concerts are the culmination of Rogue Opera and Southern Oregon University Department of Music's 9-week Opera Workshop collaboration, and will feature 14 of the Rogue Valley's finest singers including Fredna Grimland, Ellie Murray, Lorrie Hall, Shelly Cox, Mark Peterson, Brett Aakre, Sharise Blaylock, Rebecca Campbell, Dan Gibbs, Karli Krueger, Leoni Lanzas, Jennifer Matsuura, Deborah Tingle and Cassandra Tolman.
The Ashland show is Friday, March 9, 8 p.m. at the Southern Oregon University Music Recital Hall, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd. Tickets available at the door and from Rogue Opera at 608-6400. $15 adult $5 student.
The Medford show is Sunday, March 11, — p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 85 South Holly St. Suggested donation $15 Adult $5 Student
A "Meet the Artists" reception will follow each concert. Proceeds benefit Rogue Opera's Educational Programs and collaborations with SOU.
