SOU Choirs perform 'Light and Shadow'
The Southern Oregon University Department of Music Concert and Chamber Choirs will present "Light and Shadow" a concert of classical choral music on Sunday, March 18, at — p.m. in the SOU Recital Hall.
The SOU Concert Choir, under the direction of Fredna Grimland, will present John Rutter's moving "Requiem." Completed in 1985, Rutter's "Requiem" follows the precedents of Brahms, Faur&
233;, and Durufl&
233; in using carefully selected texts in place of much of the standard Missa Pro defunctis sequence. Both the traditional text and the insertions make much use of the beautiful image of passing from darkness into light. The work has an arch-like formal structure within which is contained some of Rutter's most haunting and well known choral music to date. The choir will be accompanied by a chamber ensemble of students and professional orchestral musicians.
The SOU Chamber Choir, under the direction of Paul French, will present a varied program which features Claudio Monteverdi's dramatic madrigal cycle "Lamento d'Ariana." The music for this work is based on a lost opera of Monteverdi's based on the Ariana legend. Monteverdi beautifully captures Ariana's changing emotions as she laments her fate in true operatic style. Also featured on the program is award-winning composer Morten Lauridsen's fiery "Ov'&
232; lass, il bel viso," Craig Kingsbury's sensuous "Lorca Songs" and Ricky ian Gordon's joyful "Three by Langston," settings of poetry by the great American poet Langston Hughes. Chamber Choir is accompanied by SOU Staff Accompanist Jodi French.
Tickets for this performance are $8 for general admission, $6 for seniors, and free for students. Tickets and season passes can be purchased at the SOU Music Box Office or by calling 552-6101. For more information please visit Southern Oregon University's Music Department Web site at /music
