Jazzy klezmer

The Michael Winograd Klezmer Trio, featuring Michael Winograd on clarinet, Patrick Farrell on accordion and Benjy Fox-Rosen on bass, has found a slot among the top musicians playing klezmer and jazz today.

The trio blends traditional Yiddish songs and new compositions with chamber-like improvisations and spontaneous arrangements, giving klezmer music a fresh approach.

Winograd's trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Havurah Shir Hadash, 185 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland.

Klezmer is a folk-music style from Eastern Europe. The genre consists largely of dance tunes and instrumentals for weddings and other celebrations. A new form of klezmer developed in the United States with the influx of Jewish immigrants during the late 1800s to the early 20th century.

Winograd has recorded and performed with klezmer-hip hop musician SoCalled, the European-based Budowitz, trumpeter and band leader Frank London and the Boston-based Klezmer Conservatory Band. He performs and leads workshops at locations such as France's Reunion Island, Canada's Dawson City Music Festival, Winnepeg and Calgary folk festivals, Austria's Klezmore Festival and Carnegie Hall in New York City. He has taught klezmer music at Paris Klezmer, KlezKanada and Living Traditions KlezKamp. Winograd also produces records, composes music and plays synthesizer in the Brooklyn-based metal band Yiddish Princess.

Accordionist Farrell composes new music, free jazz, cabaret, theater, klezmer and various forms of Eastern European folk music. He leads his own group, Stagger Back Brass Band, and also performs with Ljova and the Kontraband, Frank London's Klezmer Brass All-Stars, Veveritse Brass Band, Romashka and in other groups and situations around New York City.

Fox-Rosen has toured the United States and Europe performing with the Luminescent Orchestrii. He also performs regularly with many of New York's klezmer, Hungarian and jazz musicians.

Advance tickets cost $10, $8 for students and are available at www.brownpapertickets.com and Music Coop in Ashland. Tickets will cost $12 at the door.
