Pianist Jim Quinby and vocalist Marcella Rose Ruikis play what they hear on the radio, making for a very eclectic repertoire.
"The only thing that holds it together is it's all songs we both like," Quinby says.
The duo, Smoky Red, plays at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, at The Wild Goose Cafe & Bar, 2365 Ashland St., Ashland. They play again as a trio with bassist Jay Jorgensen at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Avalon Bar & Grill, 105 W. Valley View Road, Talent.
Smoky Red's sets range from jazz standards to contemporary pop, originals to covers, boogie-woogie to New Orleans-style R&B. Ruikis and Quinby recently learned Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours."
"She (Ruikisis) sings the hell out of that song, and I love playing it, even though it's in a weird key," Quinby says.
The pair also features songs by John Prine, Etta James, Taj Mahal, Over the Rhine, Bonnie Raitt and George Gershwin as well as Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice," done as reggae.
The cover to the Avalon gig is $5. The Wild Goose gig is free. See www.smokyred.com.
