In Focus: Rogue Valley Symphonic Band Halloween concert

The Rogue Valley Symphonic Band will perform a free Halloween concert featuring “spooky” music by Bach, Whitacre, Moussorgsky and several new composers at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, in the Music Recital Hall, 450 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Free tickets are available at Paddington Station, 125 E. Main St., Ashland. Ying String Quartet: Chamber Music Concerts will host a concert by the Grammy Award-winning Ying String Quartet at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the Music Recital Hall, 450 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. The concert will feature Haydn’s “String Quartet in D Major, Op. 50 no. 6;” Zhou Long’s “The Old Fisherman;” Vivian Fung’s “Pizzicato;” Tan Dun’s “Eight Colors;” and Beethoven’s “String Quartet in E Minor, Op. 59 no. 2.” The quartet’s performances regularly take place in many of the world’s most important concert halls; however, the quartet’s belief that concert music can also be a meaningful part of everyday life has also drawn the foursome to perform in settings as diverse as the workplace, schools, juvenile prisons, and the White House. Tickets are $36 to $45, $5 for full-time SOU students and Oregon Trail Card holders. A pre-concert lecture will be given by musicologist Ed Wight, featuring insights on the composers and repertoire featured in each concert, will be given at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Room 132 of the Music Building. Admission to the preview talk is free. Caballito Negro and Left Edge Percussion: Caballito Negro and Left Edge Percussion will perform Jeff Herriott’s “The Stone Tapestry,” an epic, shape-shifting work for flute and percussion soloists with percussion quartet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Music Recital Hall, 450 S. Mountain Ave., on the Southern Oregon University campus in Ashland. “The Stone Tapestry” weaves together myths about origins, life-cycles, and the significance of change.
