In Focus: Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon

YSSO, conducted by Cynthia Hutton, opens its 2021-22 season with the Fall Concert Series, to be performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, in the Oregon Center for the Arts Music Recital Hall, 450 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University, Ashland. Hutton will lead a combined symphony orchestra of 60 accomplished young musicians in performances of “Symphony No. 29 in A Major, K. 201” by Mozart, Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46,” the “Overture to Rienzi” by Richard Wagner (arr. Dackow), “Procession of the Nobles” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (arr. Isaac), “Old Wine in New Bottles” by Gordon Jacob and an arrangement of music from “La Belle Hélène” by Jacques Offenbach. Both the Craterian Theater and Southern Oregon University’s Oregon Center for the Arts require proof of full vaccination or negative COVID-19 test results to attend a performance. Words from a Cuban Father: This one-woman show, created and performed by Southern Oregon University Theatre guest artist Alina Ceñal, uses dance strategically in her autobiographical meditation on the death of her dad — who was a law school roommate of Fidel Castro in Havana. Her dad eventually fled to Miami in 1961, and the family soon followed. The show, directed by James Dolon, features a string of anecdotes and impersonations of family and friends, mixed with dance ranging from Cuban hip-swaying to the aesthetic formalities of ballet. Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at the Main Stage Theater at Southern Oregon University, 491 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland.
