So Percussion: Chamber Music Concerts will present a concert by So Percussion — Eric Cha-Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting — at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, in the Music Recital Hall, 450 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. The program will feature music by Angélica Negrón, Jason Treuting, Viet Cuong, Vijay Iyer, Julia Wolfe, Nathalie Joachim, and Caroline Shaw. For more than 20 years, So Percussion has redefined chamber music for the 21st century, brining to life a vibrant percussion repertoire in classical music, pop, indie rock and more. Since its first performance as a student ensemble in 1999, So Percussion has appeared at many of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Paris Philharmonie, the Barbican Centre, BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), Walt Disney Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel, the Lincoln Center Festival, and at the international TED conference in 2016. Tickets are $36 to $45, $5 for full-time SOU students and Oregon Trail Card holders. The show, featuring over 20 local performers and musicians, will utilize art, dance, music and video to raise suicide awareness and promote mental wellness. Sharing of personal stories, experiences and talents will be encouraged with the purpose of helping others find their way back from tragedy, depression or adversity. The primary goal of this is event is not to shine a light on suicide, but rather all of the reasons to want to live and the support that is available. ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum: A variety of interactive science exhibits are available at the museum, located at 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. The interactive museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. Many exhibits will be modified to reduce touch surfaces — fewer hands-on activities — and increase physical distancing. Exhibits that will be temporarily closed include Bubble-ology, the Jam Room, Dark Science and Pacific Crest Cove. Masks are required for visitors ages 5 and up, and recommended for children ages 2 through 4. Staff and volunteers will be masked.
