Heart Of The Rogue Festival: Travel Medford will host the inaugural Heart of the Rogue Festival Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15, at Pear Blossom Park in downtown Medford. The festival will feature a Kid Zone, food trucks, locally produced wine, beer and spirits, and vendors and exhibits all exclusively from the Rogue Valley. Haunted History Tour: Costumed docents will lead an hour-long “Haunted History” tour Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15, in downtown Jacksonville. Guests will be introduced to some of the town’s historic buildings along with the restless ghosts and spirits who still occupy them. The courthouse tour features stories of brothels, epidemics and hangings. The Britt Hill tour shares tales of arson, saloons and Oregon’s first Chinatown. The walking tours are not your “typical” ghost tours with special effects but are history tours about real hauntings resulting from past events. Tours leave from the Jacksonville Visitors Center at the corner of N. Oregon and C streets. Tours are offered from 6 to 7 p.m. each night leaving from the visitors center every 15 minutes. Low-cost pet vaccines: Make an appointment for your pet to get vaccinated and licensed at the Jackson County Animal Shelter, 5595 S. Pacific Highway, Phoenix, on Saturday, Oct. 15. This drive-thru, appointment-only clinic is open to dogs and cats, as well as puppies and kittens. Vaccinations available for dogs are rabies and distemper/parvo booster. Vaccinations available for cats are rabies and distemper/rhino/calici booster. No nail trimming done. Described as “a determined, trail-wise woman,” Mary Louisa Black and her family left Missouri in 1865 to begin their trek to the Oregon country. When preparing for their journey, Mary Lousia included in their belongings a quilt, “sent along to be a comfort and reminder of the loving friends who quilted the going away present.” The Blacks settled along the Rogue River, near Shady Cove. Short Story Writing Group: JCLS invites writers in three age categories — middle school, high school, and college — to write a short adventure story starring themselves, in the writing lounge every Sunday in October, from noon to 3:45 p.m. at the Medford library, 205 S. Ukrainian Refugees Benefit Concert: Uniting for Ukraine Rogue Valley, a grass-roots volunteer-run organization, will present a benefit concert and silent auction to support families coming to the Rogue Valley to escape the war in Ukraine, from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Havurah Synagogue, 185 N.
