In Focus: MLK Day celebrations

Southern Oregon MLK Ashland Plaza Celebration: The City of Ashland will hold a tribute celebration for the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., on the Plaza in downtown Ashland, at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16. Listen to King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and hear from local leaders and heroes of civil rights. Local MLK documentaries are available for streaming through the S.O. MLK website. Grants Pass Community Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration: The annual Grants Pass Community Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at the Newman United Methodist Church, 132 N.E. B St., Grants Pass. Nationally recognized keynote speakers will be Geneva Craig, PhD, RN, and Mary Liuzzo Lilleboe. Both are leaders and activists in Civil and Human Rights education and awareness. Dr. Craig participated in the 1960s-era of The Civil Rights Movement, in Selma, Alabama, her birthplace. As a teenager, she was arrested multiple times for her participation in the peaceful marches in Selma. She was a marcher in the three attempts to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge, including the infamous event known as “Bloody Sunday.” Mary Liuzzo Lilleboe has been immersed in the Civil Rights Movement since she was 17 years old. Her mother, Viola Liuzzo was murdered by the KKK while participating in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March. The event will also include live music, readings and poetry. Ice Skating: The Ashland Rotary Centennial Ice Rink, located at 95 Winburn Way, across from the Lithia Park playground in Ashland, is open for skating through February 2023. Brine, Brew & Barrel: The Brine, Brew & Barrel fermentation festival will be held Friday through Sunday, Jan. 13-15, at the Ashland Hills Hotel & Suites, 2525 Ashland St., Ashland. The festival celebrates the multi-cultural culinary tradition of fermented products including pickles, krauts, kombucha, beer, wine, cider, mead, chocolate, cheese, coffee, sourdough, and everything in between. Visitors will enjoy an all-day vendors expositions, workshops and demonstrations, activities for the whole family, and other fermentation focused events. Festivities will kick off Friday night, at the historic Ashland Springs Hotel with BrewBash, a 3-course dinner showcasing Rogue Ales paired with a special menu crafted by Larks Home Kitchen Executive Chef, Franco Console. On Saturday, the main festival held at Ashland Hills Hotel & Suites will offer a vendor tasting event as well as hands-on workshops, demos and talks with fermentation experts including Alex Lewin and Kirsten Shockey.
