Medford crosswalk sting set for Friday

Medford police are preparing to conduct a crosswalk sting Friday at the intersection of North Keene Way Drive and East McAndrews Road.

The "targeted pedestrian enforcement" operation, which uses a decoy pedestrian, will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., a police news release said.

Motorists should be aware that according to Oregon law, there is a crosswalk at every intersection, whether it is marked with paint or not. Drivers must stop and stay stopped for a crossing pedestrian until the person has cleared their lane of traffic as well as the adjacent lane. Also, it is against Oregon law to pass another vehicle without stopping if it is stopped at a marked or unmarked crosswalk to allow a pedestrian to cross  the road, the release said.

Failing to stop for a pedestrian at a crosswalk or passing a stopped vehicle at a crosswalk can result in a $260 traffic violation, the release said.
