UPDATED: Commercial truck crashes near Union Creek; driver recovering

A Les Schwab commercial truck crashed on Highway 62 east of the Crater Lake area Friday morning, injuring the driver and spilling its load of tires into the trees.

The incident was reported at 5:15 a.m. near milepost 50, between Union Creek and Prospect. The area is also close to Ginko Basin Road. The truck, driven by 50-year-old Gary Flory of Redmond, was traveling westbound when it and the two trailers filled with tires it towed went off the road for an unknown reason. The truck collided head-on into a tree.

The man was trapped inside and received severe injuries. Crews from the Prospect Rural Fire Protection District spent about 45 minutes extricating him from the vehicle. He was then transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center by helicopter. He was listed in fair condition Friday evening, hospital officials said.

Oregon State Police, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation also responded to the scene. ODOT and OSP officials remained on scene coordinating a salvage operation of the truck and spilled tires Friday, which caused intermittent delays for drivers.
