ACCESS warns clients to check possibly contaminated nut butters

Recipients of food from ACCESS’ network of 25 local food pantries are urged to check the “best by” dates on jars of nut butters received through the food pantries, following a recall notice by distributor nSPIRED Natural Foods. The nut butters, including certain lots of Arrowhead Mills Peanut Butters as well as Marantha Peanut Butters and Almond Butters and a few private label nut butters, are being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination found during FDA testing.

Food recipients can compare the best by date printed on the top of the jar to the list of recalled products linked from the FDA recall notice icon at the top of ACCESS’s website, www.accesshelps.org.

The Oregon Food Bank has also issued its own statement about the recall identifying, “pint-size glass jars with white labels listing ingredients and stating ‘distributed by Oregon Food Bank’” as also possibly affected. They recommend immediate disposal of any of these jars with a "best by" date of July 21 or earlier.

ACCESS’s network of 25 food pantries disposed of all affected products still on their shelves as soon as the recall was issued, but some affected products may already have been distributed to food bank customers.

The FDA article linked from ACCESS’s home page can also be found at www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm410533.htm.
