Ashland utility officials warn of phone scam
Ashland residents are getting calls from national scammers telling them their electricity will be shut off unless they pay over the phone, the city of Ashland reports.
The city has received several calls from customers of the Ashland Municipal Electric Utility, saying they've received calls supposedly from the city-owned utility. The caller tells the customer they have to obtain a Green Dot prepaid debit card to pay their bill over the phone.
The callers aren't representatives of the city and the calls are a scam, the city announced. It recommends anyone receiving such a call ignore the payment demand and contact the Ashland Police Department at 541-482-5211.
Anyone with a question on the status of their bill can call the city's customer service division at 541-488-6004, or come in person to 20 E. Main St., Ashland.
