Talent will tax recreational marijuana
Recreational marijuana sales in Talent will be taxed by the city, but by how much has not yet been decided.
The City Council Wednesday night voted unanimously to tax recreational marijuana if voters approve Measure 91 in the Nov. 4 election. The measure would allow possession, manufacture and sale of marijuana by people 21 and older.
Talent joins other jurisdictions in the Rogue Valley and around the state approving the tax as a preemptive move. Should Measure 91 pass, only the state could tax marijuana sales thereafter.
“I think it’s a reasonable thing to do, whether the state passes it or not,” Mayor Bill Cecil said before the council vote.
On Sept. 3, the council directed city staff to prepare an ordinance that would enable taxation and a resolution to establish a rate of up to 15 percent. But the council rejected by a 4-2 vote a motion to create a tax on medical marijuana.
