Human remains found in burning trailer

A death investigation is underway at the Jackson County Sheriff's Department after firefighters found a dead body inside a smoldering trailer Thursday afternoon outside White City.

The fire was reported at about 4:30 p.m. on a piece of commercial land used for equipment storage in the 1900 block of East Gregory Road. Jackson County Fire District 3 Battalion Chief Mike Hussey said three engines responded to the small blaze.

"When crews arrived on scene, they had some visible fire coming from the 24-foot trailer, but pretty much it was just smoke," Hussey said.

Crews had the fire under control in about five minutes. They started to remove debris from the unit when they found a body inside. Sheriff's department officials said neither the cause of death nor the identify of the victim had been determined. An autopsy will be performed on the remains next week to determine the cause of death.

Jackson County records identified the property where the trailer was located as being owned by White City Steel, but an employee reached by phone Friday denied that there had been a fire on the company's property.
