Our View: Seffinger for Position 4

Stefani Seffinger says she's ready to take her experience as a parks and recreation commissioner to the next level and serve on the City Council. We agree, and recommend voters elect her for Position 4.

Seffinger was elected to the Parks and Recreation Commission in 2010, and her fellow commissioners voted her chairwoman in 2013 and 2014. She also represents the commission on the city's Forest Lands Commission.

Seffinger says she wants to use her experience on the Parks Commission as a councilor to make sure the two elected bodies continue to work together. The entities clashed in recent years over tax revenue that was formerly dedicated to parks but was moved into the city's general fund by voter-approved property tax measures in the 1990s. A memorandum of understanding that Seffinger helped create now governs the relationship between the two elected bodies.

Seffinger says her top concerns include Ashland's affordability, local steps to address climate change and encouraging economic growth by supporting e-commerce and cottage industries such as organic farming.

Her opponent, Biome Michael Erickson, previously ran for mayor. He is a production supervisor for Pickled Planet, an organic sauerkraut and pickle company. Erickson is also a conspiracy theorist who says he's running to raise awareness that international Zionism controls the media, education and government, and that some Ashland city officials are its agents.

Who are they? He's "not at liberty to say."

We, however, are at liberty to say Erickson does not belong on the City Council. Stefani Seffinger does, and we urge Ashland voters to elect her.
