Jackson County will recount GMO labeling measure next week
Jackson County's votes for Measure 92 will be recounted next week.
The recount will start at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday in the Jackson County Elections Office, 1101 W. Main St., Medford, and is expected to continue through the week, the elections office announced today.
It's part of statewide recount that was triggered after the measure, which would require foods with genetically modified organisms to be labeled, failed by a slim margin in the Nov. 4 election. According to the Oregon Secretary of State's website, there were 752,666 votes in favor of the measure statewide, or 49.97 percent, to 753,478 against, or 50.03 percent. A recount is automatically triggered when the difference is not more than one-fifth of 1 percent of the votes cast.
In Jackson County, 46,405 residents — more than 55 percent — voted yes on the measure. About 44.8 percent, or 37,617 voters, said no.
