Ashland Library Giving Tree: Patrons are invited to bring new, unwrapped mittens, socks, hats and jackets to place under the Giving Tree until Dec. 3 in the Ashland library children's department, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Recipients will be children ranging from infants through five-year-olds. Store-bought or handmade items are welcome, as well as new or gently used books. The gifts will be presented to Head Start and Early Head Start low income children at the former Briscoe Elementary School in Ashland. Picture books about giving will be on display in the children's department. Library hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays, closed Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. The Schneider Museum of Art: Selections from PORTLAND2014: A Biennial of Contemporary Art, an exhibit that surveys Oregon artists who are defining and advancing the contemporary arts landscape, will run through Dec. 6 at The Schneider Museum of Art on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Curator Amanda Hunt visited nearly 50 studios and reviewed more than 300 entries before selecting 15 Oregon artists to participate in the exhibit. These artists include up-and-coming as well as established professionals who work in a variety of media. Most are based in Portland, Salem or Eugene. World Aids Day Event: The 27th annual World Aids Day Candlelight Observance "Getting to Zero: Zero New Infections, Zero Discrimination, Zero Deaths" will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, 1801 E. Jackson St., Medford. This interdenominational ceremony of remembrance, dedication and music will include appearances by the Rogue Valley Gay Men's Chorus, Alan Collins of OnTrack's AIDS Project, Lotus Rising Project's Youth Empowerment Theater, HIV-positive community members, and local spiritual and human services leaders. TED Talk Discussion: Join a viewing and discussion of Dr. Stuart Hameroff's TED (Technology, Engineering, Design) talk on "Studies of Consciousness" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Hameroff is a clinical anesthesiologist and professor known for his studies on consciousness. He has explored the possibility of consciousness existing independently of the body, creating a potential scientific approach to questions about the soul and spirituality.
