Man involved in Highway 101 shooting dies
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon State Police say a man shot by a local police officer along the Oregon coast has died.
He was identified as 55-year-old Robert J. Jenkins of Roseburg. The police said he died about 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lower Umpqua Hospital in Reedsport.
Police said an officer from Reedsport fired at Jenkins Tuesday morning after area law enforcement agencies reported motorists making driving complaints attributed to the man's Subaru station wagon.
Police say the station wagon caught fire on U.S. 101, and a school bus driver who stopped to offer an extinguisher backed away after seeing a man with a handgun. No students were aboard the bus.
After that, police report, four law enforcement officers arrived and contacted the driver, and during that encounter, Jenkins was shot.
