Grizz alpine skiers finish strong at state

The Ashland High girls alpine ski team placed second as a team in the slalom and giant slalom combined, second in the team giant slalom and had two top-10 individual placers at the OISRA state championships, March 5-6 at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort.

Senior Kelsey McKelvey placed sixth in the slalom, completing her first run in 45.45 seconds and her second in 42.05 for a combined 1:27.50. The next-best Grizzly in the slalom was Maddie Hunkele, who placed 13th in a combined 1:34.02. Lincoln's Carolina Maienza took individual slalom honors with a winning time of 1:21.29.

Hunkele placed sixth in the giant slalom, finishing her first run in 48.45 and her second in 42.95 for a combined 1:31.40. Also for Ashland, Trueda Pollard finished 10th in 1:32.99. Hood River's Lucy McLean won the event in 1:26.56.

Ashland's slalom team — consisting of Hunkele, McKelvey, Pollard, Karen Bach and Meadow Sylvan — placed second with a combined time of 4:33.99, about eight seconds behind the winning team from Lincoln.

The Grizzlies also placed third in the combined giant slalom behind Lincoln and Hood River and second behind only Lincoln in the final combined team standings. Fifteen teams were represented at the state meet.

McKelvey was seventh overall and Hunkele ninth in the final individual combined standings.
